Songs for the Easter Season: “He Was Heard”

Bethany
“I am the resurrection and the life.”

Being raised in a non-liturgical Christian community, I’m too often oblivious to the church calendar (with the exceptions of Christmas, Easter & All Hallow’s Eve [=Halloween!]). Yesterday a friend pointed me to Trevin Wax’s “Don’t Waste the Easter Season“. Trevin argues that we spend the 50 days between Resurrection Sunday and Pentecost [= “the Easter season”, or “Eastertide”] listening to music that focuses on “the resurrection that empowers our Christian life”. I like that idea… particularly since I just spent some time over the Easter weekend overhauling my “Resurrection” playlist. Here’s one of the oldies on my playlist.

“He Was Heard”

In the fullness of the promised time
The Final Priest did come
And He offered up a living sacrifice
Now we His children wait for Him
With hope and joyful praise
For we know that God has heard Him
For we know that He was raised

Michael Card first released “He Was Heard” in 1984 on Known By the Scars, an album about Jesus’ life and ministry. That was just about the time that I was introduced to Michael Card’s music. [The original release is still available on the 1988 The Life compilation]. It was re-released in 2000 on Soul Anchor, an album based on the book of Hebrews… how many artists have tackled that project? He is one of my favourite artists because of his many projects covering most of the canon of Scripture. This is one of the songs that hooked me.
