PM murder plot prompts tight security in Trinidad and Tobago

A uthorities in Trinidad and Tobago are beefing up security after uncovering an assassination plot against the prime minister and three Cabinet members, state media reported. A senior government official told the Caribbean New Media Group, or C News, that suspects linked to the plot have been arrested and that more arrests are expected. The threat against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the three Cabinet members came from a group that includes international drug and gun traffickers, the same official said. A “radical Islamic group is also involved,” C News reported, without specifying which. Officials in the Caribbean country declared a state of emergency in August in a bid to curb the islands’ rising rate of drug-related murder.
