What would Good Friday celebrations be without the traditional effigy of Judas Iscariot being hung on telephone and electricity poles in strategic places throughout the country.

For centuries this tradition depicting the betrayal of Jesus by one of his disciples called Judas, became an act of revenge by Christians. As it grew in popularity it became a feature of the celebration depicting the betrayal and death of Jesus Christ.

The effigy normally called Good Friday Bobolee represents Judas Iscariot, the disciple of Jesus who betrayed his master for 30 pieces of silver. In the Holy Bible it states “After the decision to crucify Jesus, Judas exited the temple where the trial was taking place and went and hung him in the courtyard”

For centuries Good Friday bobolees had taken centre stage among youths in most rural villages in Trinidad and Tobago. Judas was garbed in ragged clothes with a cap on his head. He was the victim of violent attacks. He was beaten with a stick, kicked, spat upon, and when he fell to the ground he was beaten until his effigy was completely disfigured, and left lying helplessly on the side of the road.

A “religious war” is brewing in a small community in Princes Town over the desecration of two Hindu prayer rooms by a Christian woman who declares it was God who destroyed several murtis.

Sister Sharon Mohammed, 50, religious leader of recently formed Full Gospel Church named “Joy Tabernacle” of Hope Road, Second Branch, Princes Town told Newsday “it was God who did it”.

PM signals better times ahead with discovery of 48 million barrels of crude oil by Petrotrin

The people of this country can expect better times ahead as State-owned Petrotrin has struck “black gold” with the discovery of 48 million barrels of crude oil, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said yesterday.

PM murder plot prompts tight security in Trinidad and Tobago

Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago are beefing up security after uncovering an assassination plot against the prime minister and three Cabinet members, state media reported. A senior government official told the Caribbean New Media Group, or C News, that suspects linked to the plot have been arrested and that more arrests are expected. The threat against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the three Cabinet members came from a group that includes international drug and gun traffickers, the same official said. A “radical Islamic group is also involved,” C News reported, without specifying which. Officials in the Caribbean country declared a state of emergency in August in a bid to curb the islands’ rising rate of drug-related murder.

THE Merry Monarch today is back on the streets of Trinidad and Tobago once again. At 4 am, J’ouvert bands took to the streets with their clothes and skin covered in mud, chocolate, oil, paint or whatever is available. Others chose to portray topical events which took place over the last year.
