Ministry Update

Opportunities for the ministry of Horizon Education Network continue to abound. One researcher has estimated the growth rate for online education in India at over 50% per year. Through a partner school in India, we are providing training in online teaching, helping to develop software skills, and consulting on course development. The move to online and blended learning is a major project for the school during the next year. Most of the faculty have completed Horizon’s Effective Online Teaching course, and several have also completed the first Moodle Skills for Facilitators course.

Brazil is also in the top 10 for online education growth with a rate of over 25% per year. For years, Horizon has partnered with several Brazilian schools. We provide administrative support, faculty training, and ready-made courses. After the major revision of New Testament Survey in English last year, we realized the need to update the Portuguese version of the course as well. That project is progressing well, but as these things go we are making minor revisions to the English again!

In May, I travelled to Montreal, Quebec, to lead three days of training for the faculty at SEMBEQ. My colleague, Dale Marshfield, and I taught twelve faculty members a method of course design. The approach builds student understanding intentionally by carefully considering how people learn. Faculty development is a strategic investment in the training of church leaders for Quebec.

I am one assignment away from completing the third course in the M.Ed. program. This stretching experience is developing clearer thinking about how to best respond to the opportunities for online theological education.

School is out! Summer activities are in full swing. A, E, K, A, and G all have employment and ministry positions. A is working in the office at Compass Community Church, our sending church. E is working as a counselor at Forest Cliff Day Camps in and around London. K is cobbling together babysitting jobs and volunteer opportunities. A and G have started a flyer delivery route. L will have fun at a couple of camps.

Every five years, we have the blessing of participating in ABWE’s Missionary Enrichment Conference. Later this month, we’re headed to Washington, D.C. We are looking forward to fellowshipping with missionary colleagues, who are serving God around the world. This year the keynote speaker is Dr. Charles Ware, the president of Crossroads Bible College.

Praise & Prayer

  • Praise God for students who have completed Moodle Skills for Facilitators.
  • Pray for students starting the course soon, some from India and others from Ireland.
  • Pray for encouragement at ABWE’s ME Conference and for safe travels to Washington, D.C. and back.
  • Praise God for summer opportunities for my children.
