Eminent Christians: Charles Wesley

Charles Wesley is number 3 on Michael Haykin’s list of Eminent Christians. In a day when most churches sang hymns, Charles Wesley’s name would have been immediately recognized. I wonder how many Christians today could name this author of over 6,000 hymns, including such enduring classics as “And Can It Be”, “Christ the Lord is Risen Today”, and “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing”. Certainly there are hymns that need to be discarded or updated and there are contemporary hymns and choruses that will be enduring classics; however, we ought not to jettison history to make room for the present.
